Theorizing Diaspora:  On Two Thousand Years of Relationship

There are two strong centers of Jewish life – one in Israel and the other in the Jewish Diaspora.  What is the relationship between these two centers, and what should it be? What does it mean to live in Diaspora when there is a vibrant sovereign Jewish state on the world map? What does homeland mean today and how does it relate to living Jewish life?  Do the Diaspora and the State of Israel have similar or dissimilar roles to play vis-a-vis Jewish life?

To consider these questions, we will explore how concepts of Diaspora and the relationship between communities in Israel and communities in the Diaspora have been expressed throughout Jewish history.
