Director
Gail Baker, B.A. (Hons.), B.Ed, M.Ed.


Gail is our Director and a cofounder the Lola Stein Institute in 2003. Gail's professional expertise is deep and wide with a career long focus on learning through the arts and specialist areas including literature and drama.

Gail is currently Principal of The Toronto Heschel School which she founded with four other educators in 1996. She served as President of the Presidium of Principals, Toronto Board of Jewish Education. 2006-2008.

Before The Toronto Heschel School, Gail already had 20 years experience teaching drama, literature and developing curriculum for developmentally diverse children at public and independent schools.

Gail has also created and established several other inventive educational programmes, such as Learning Strengths, a programme to promote the enhancement of creative learning styles in children and The A.D.A.M. School, an arts-based pre-school.

Gail holds an M.Ed. in Curriculum Development from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, 1982, a B.A. (Hons.) History Major, York University, 1977 and B.Ed. Junior/Intermediate Division; Elementary Certificate in Special Education, York University, 1977.

Gail is co-author with Otto Baruch Rand of The Story of Civilizations for Young People, Volume 1, a text book integrating ancient history and ancient Jewish history, now in development.

Director of Curriculum and Training,
Gregory Beiles, B.A. (Hons.), B.Ed, M.A.


Greg is our Director of Curriculum and Training, coming to the Institute after three years as Curriculum Director of The Toronto Heschel School where he directed the Middle School (2001-2003) and taught core and Judaic studies since 1997.

Greg earned a Master of Arts Degree at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto in 2006 with a dissertation, in the philosophy of education, entitled, "Revelation, knowledge and ethics: a working theory for Jewish education." During his Bachelor of Arts (Hons.)at the University of Toronto, he was a Jewish Studies Specialist and History Minor and spent one year of study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1995. Greg is currently working on a Ph.D. at the Centre and Department for the Study of Religion, University of Toronto.

Curriculum Development
Aviva Silverman, B.A. (Hons.), M.A.


Aviva comes to the Lola Stein Institute with over 25 years experience in the field of Jewish Education. She has worked as a classroom teacher, principal of Jewish Studies and curriculum writer for several educational institutions in Canada, the U.S. and Israel, including the Melton Adult Mini-school and Camp Ramah. Aviva has taught children and adults, formally and informally, as well as those with special needs.

In addition to developing and writing curriculum at Lola Stein Institute, Aviva continues her work as a Bible Curriculum Consultant for the "Standards and Benchmarks Project for TaNaKH Education in Jewish Day Schools" through the Melton Research Centre, New York, funded by the Avi Chai Foundation.

Aviva completed the Senior Educators Program of Melton/Hebrew University in Jerusalem, earned an M.A. in Jewish Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and an Honours B.A. in Jewish Studies from the University of Toronto.


Teacher Coach and Editorial Consultant
Ricki Wortzman, M.Ed.


Ricki earned a Master in Education at the Ontario Institute of Education, University of Toronto and is certified as a Facilitator for the New Teacher Academy of Columbia University. Ricki is now completing certification as Professional Coach through the Ontario Institute of Education and Adler Learning.

Ricki has taught children in kindergarten through grade eight, co-authored text books for students and teachers in the disciplines of mathematics, science, language arts and the arts, as well as trade books for young children. She has created and presented workshops on a variety of topics to teachers, administrators and parents and consulted as a faculty coach for new and veteran teachers.
